As a school we have strong links with South Sudan Voices of Hope
During Collective Worship the children have been learning about giving and helping others. The children have learnt about giving in the context of the world, such as helping children in Sudan who do not have access to clean water or need help with seed corn which has been lost due to adverse weather or war.
The children year 2 organise fundraising activities to help raise money for South Sudan.
All money collected is given in person to Kenneth Elisapana, who runs the Christian charity South Sudan Voices of Hope, when Miss Margaret sees him each year.
Kenneth keeps in touch with the children via Zoom. The children have opportunities each term to find out what is happening in South Sudan and how their money is helping.
Recently, our Bishops Visitor visited a school in Yei, which we are now going to work in partnership with. Immanuel Kindergarten was founded in the 1980s to serve the young children of Yei in South Sudan. A long civil war intervened, and the children and families became refugees in Uganda. When they eventually returned to Yei nearly 20 years later with very few belongings, a priority was to re-open the Kindergarten. The roof was falling in and inside was dark and dreary. The Immanuel Kindergarten charity was founded to work in partnership with the families of Yei to build a new school.
The children from the school have written to the children at St Peter in Eastgate. The children at St Peter in Eastgate collected bottle tops for Miss Margaret to take to the school; these are being used as maths resources for the children.
We have linked with the school via Zoom and sang Collective Worship songs to each other.
