A welcome from the Governing Body of St Peter in Eastgate Church of England (controlled) Infant School.
The school’s vision is to encourage and support every child to develop their talents and skills in a stimulating, secure and happy environment based on the understanding that we are all made in the image of God and loved by him through his Son Jesus Christ.
‘Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us’ - Ephesians 5:2
In carrying out our work as a Governing Body, at the heart of what we do are the school’s Kingdom Values of: Friendship, Respect, Responsibility, Courage, Trust, Forgiveness
What do governors do?
As school governors, we provide strategic leadership and accountability within the school. Governors appoint the head teacher; hold the main responsibility for finance in the school and work with the head teacher to make the decisions about balancing financial resources.
Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing body; all decisions made are the joint responsibility of the governing body.
Our role as the governing body is a strategic one, its key functions are to:
- set the aims and objectives for the school;
- set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives;
- set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives;
- monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives;
- be a source of challenge and support to the head teacher.
The role of Mrs Marshall as head teacher is operational: the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body.
We meet as a full governing body four times a year, every three months during the school year. We have a separate Finance Committee to approve and monitor the school budget. This also meets four times a year; three governors plus the Head Teacher and School Business Manager sit on this separate committee. Depending upon the needs of the school, additional committees may be formed. During the pandemic, we held several Strategy Meetings to support Mrs Marshall as regulations changed. We currently continue to meet remotely by Zoom.
Who are the governors?
The Instrument of Governance Order 2015 requires the governing body shall consist of: three parent governors, one Local Authority governor, one staff governor, the head teacher, three foundation governors (who are appointed by the church linked to the school) and up to four co-opted governors, so a maximum of 13 people. Our governing body is made up of people from various walks of life; many have had children at the school, some are current parents. All governors commit considerable amounts of time and energy to the school and are committed to the aims and values of the school.
